HELP NEEDED - Spring springs forth

We're posting requests for help needed at the various SBWCN satellites. Please respond to Julia Parker, SBWCN, 966-9005 -- unless other specifications are given.

We'd all love it if you'd post comments here about what you're doing, the volunteer experience, generally, and any thoughts you might have to help others cope with what we all know is or can be stressful. This is your blog - it will be what you want it to be.

Requests received (the first three moved from "Lessons Learned") — click on Comments for details:

Request to help Julia diSieno in Santa Ynez with deer
Request to help with baby raccoons
Request to help Nancy Callahan on Saturday mornings

Julia DiSiento needs help with the upcoming baby season. The fawns have to be fed 4 times a day! They will be up in Santa Ynez, so we will need some dedicated folks who will be reliable and make a commitment to feed certain days and times during the week. If we can get some folks that live in the valley..that would be great!! Because they will be located on a private ranch, we want to have as few people disturbing the residents as is possible. Please call the center and give your, name address, phone number availability, and experience to Julia Parker...We do not have any fawns at this time, but the season is upon us!!

We need volunteers who are willing to rehab baby mammals!! When tiny they need multiple feedings and lots of care..we will train. You must be willing to have them in your home.Although it seems like a good experience, we do not recommend you take mammals into your home if you have young children. There is always the risk of contamination and being bitten. Anyone interested in raccoons should have pre-rabies exposure injections.Call the center and speak to Julia Parker.

seabirds?
I saw a flyer at Tri-Counties Market, near East Beach, asking for people to call the WCN to volunteer. nice pictures --- but no seabirds - what's happening at the seabird pond at Mrs Taylor's house? Someone wrote in another section of this blog it will open around the end of March. It's near the end of March. I like cormorants; does the wildlife group need any help? If so, I'll call Mrs Taylor - I saw her tabling last year at UCSB.

To Anonymous 3/26:
The seabird pond remains closed. Word to us from one of the Board members is that they want to close it down permanently.

Too bad - seabirds are a major part of the Santa Barbara wildlife scene and to not have a water place for rehabilitation of pelicans and others would be a tragedy.

The word around is that they want to send them to Los Angeles for rehab. One can't help but wonder what the donors to the Wildlife Care (once) Network would think about that, especially those who gave money as a result of visiting the seabird pond or thinking of pelicans.

Yes, we agree, seagulls deserve the same amount of attention, pound for pound, but the realities are that they, along with pigeons, are ...umm... less loved. Ms Taylor probably will be allowed to receive gulls.

The promotional handout features a California Brown Pelican.... So does their "Sanctuary" (ha ha) Award invitation. No truth in advertising, but we (some of us) thought non-profits were different.

I hear June has two birds out there now! Think how us opossum people felt when the awards invite didn't have an opossum on them. OMG!! But, must they put every type of animal on everything they print? I saw the flyer and loved it!!!!!!! It has an opossum with it's Micky Mouse ears in full bloom! Have you guys seen the center...it is looking GREAT! A lot of hard work is being done to prepare for the up coming season!!

Sharon,
I think you're missing the point.

But definitely the WCN should feature the animals they care for, songbirds, possoms, skunks (as so prettily portrayed), raccoons, rats, pigeons and definitely seagulls.

The point was: If they're not going to rehab pelicans (and other seabirds) they should not advertise that that is what they are doing.

As for Ms. Taylor, what kind of birds? Gulls, probably, my namesakes. Or possibly a grebe - it being the seasons or nearly so - or a cormorant? I'll eat my (feathered) cap if the pond is full and operating.

MAJOR CLARIFICATION:
There was no intention of leaving any "type" of animal on or off of the flyer or invite. As far as I am concerned we love all, serve all. I do, don't care to comment otherwise. I created both of the aformentioned pieces of promotional material. The gull photo I took last year was simply replaced along with another photo because I had taken in darling hummers and bunnies recently and had new photos to use. :)
God bless them all.

peripherally related to SB Wildlife - please contact Maria Castro, below:
San Clemente Goats
Canada's largest conservation breeder of San Clemente Island goats is forced to give up his herd for health reasons. He already drastically reduced the herd last fall, with all of those animals going for slaughter as he couldn,t find interested breeders. The remaining herd consists of 12 adult does (3 cream and 9 bay), 2 yearling bucks (1 cream and 1 bay) and an older bay buck and this year,s kids (7 so far). This herd is IRREPLACEABLE. Not only is the San Clemente population overall in an extremely precarious situation and this was one of the few remaining substantial herds, this line in particular may well constitute one of the last herds guaranteed to be free of introgression from other goat breeds. (DNA work is also urgently needed to determine the relationship of the San Clementes to other goat populations, but that is another project.) A handful of animals from this line have been brought to Vancouver Island in the past 2 years by myself and another breeder, but it is not a big enough group to constitute a genetically stable population, and it does not include any animals of the ,cream 0/00 colour variant.
:::snip:::
All suggestions welcome.

June has a cormorant and a loon. don't be putting salt on your hat yet, the pool doesn't hold water. This is such a good reason to REALLY pull together and get our duck in a roll. Once the permits are granted we will know what to do to get the new facility up and running! The little seabirds are in need of help and we don't have a place local for them. Looking forward to the training class by the IBRRC on the 15th!

Maybe you can get some Duck for your Roll from the Center; or at least a gull or two. If there aren't any dead ones, I'm sure "Charon" wouldn't mind executing a couple for you. It's easy, they're all in a Row!

ROFLMAO! Duck in a Roll is the funniest thing since the Wildlife Colanders went on sale!!!!!!
I know, I know, my analogy won't hold water...
