Action Alerts: Bald Eagle and Brown Pelican

Public comment is being taken by the US Fish and Wildlife Service on two changes to present regulations.

One is to permit easier access to killing of bald eagles by Native Americans for religious purposes; public comment taken by the US F&W through June 19. What poetic justice to allow Native Americans to kill the US national symbol for religious reasons! (WildlifeCaring does NOT support such "justice.") To comment on the proposal to delist the bald eagle, please address an e-mail to baldeagledelisting@fws.gov

The other is to delist or change the listing of the California Brown Pelican as "Endangered" under the Endangered Species Act. Public comment is being taken through July 24. Here is the F&W address for comment: fws8pelicanpetition@fws.gov

Press coverage of both these issues - and much more about SB pelicans - is available at http://pelicanlife.org — click the link to the right. For more info on those proposed F&W changes, check the site's pelican and wildlife news pages.

June is swamped with pelicans, as are other caregivers up the coast, with dead pelicans being found up to Monterey. See the news page on my web site for more information: http://pelicanlife.org/news_recent.html

I post on my pelican site the news as it comes in. I've got a recent picture of the 'pond' at the updates page - and will post other pictures.

The SBWCN seems to be swamped downtown, too, with maybe even more than usual a shortage of volunteers or at least that's so at the seabird pond and what one hears about the Center....

At the pond, there are this evening, two cormorants, a seagull I brought in from the west side with suspicious injuries to its eyes, 14? pelicans (3 in today, 1 I picked up on the Mesa; another June got on Ward Mem. Hwy to UCSB, another brought in by Jen Stroh), 8 baby night herons, 1 green-backed heron ... and June. And volunteers such as myself, Amy, Eric this evening, Catlyn and others. But most of all, June. Hopefully, things are less stressful at the Center.

Let's say a prayer for all the winged and four footed babes, and also for more help at all venues. The center is overwhelmed as well. It just shows you there are few people willing to give back in the way that we do, which makes me even prouder to know all the wonderful people I do through our extended network.

Agreed, Cyndi!

Sorry to hear the Center is also low on volunteers.

Sally Bromfield and I went yesterday to Stearns Wharf, following on reports of calls, "8 or 9" I heard, in to the Center last Saturday about hooked pelicans. We rescued 3 - one of which was badly hooked in 5 places and was rescued by a wonderful guy who on his own volition climbed down the vertical ladder and pulled (how?) the young pelican out of the water.

We happened to be there and I, making a last check before leaving, noticed a group of three people hunched over. Thinking it was someone having an attack of some sort, I approached to find it was the good Samaritan attempting to remove hooks. Sally and I took the pelican and another, young and very weak, to June's. I returned later and with the help of a fisherman, got another young pelican, slightly oiled, that was begging.

And that's the reason for this posting. Pelicans on Stearns Wharf are begging for fish because they have been fed. And almost inevitably they will get hooked. And the odds are good they will die as a result. If anyone wants to go Stearns Wharf, be there and advise, pleasantly, fishermen and tourists (and locals, too) to not feed the birds, it would be a very good thing!

This morning, looking for that seagull with a fishing line-tied beak that Cyndi told June about, seen near Sea Landing, I came upon another young pelican, very weak, hobbled with fishing hook and line - and brought her to June. (Didn't find the seagull.) ...I do continue to think that most people are good out there, but sometimes, after hearing the stories yesterday of the last month or so, and seeing the birds, it is hard.

Probably at the end of this week, Sally and I will release a bunch of them at Gaviota, far enough away, we hope, for them not to return to the lure of Stearns Wharf.

It's a wild time. We are getting feathers and fur from all directions. A LOT of little ones this year. Let us know at the center if any of you can put in a few hours, or evan an hour.
Julia has had eye surgery and may need more, so ANY help would be GREAT!!!
The fur is also being well represented in the Center. A lot more bunnies this year.
